Editing in Imark

A reader that also lets you fix the line you just read.

Imark opens in reading mode. Nothing in the document asks you to change it. When a line needs fixing, the eye and pencil in the toolbar switch the whole window between the rendered page and the Markdown text.

01

Switch between reading and editing

Click the pencil in the toolbar, or press Command-E. The rendered page becomes the whole document as text. Click the eye, or press Command-E again, to return to reading.

Line numbers

Each source line has a number, so you can match a problem in the rendered document to its place in the file.

Markdown in colour

The source uses colour while the text stays plain Markdown.

Changed-line markers

A bar in the gutter marks every line that differs from the file Imark read from disk.

The macOS find bar

Press Command-F to search with the system find bar, including its match counter and replace field.

02

Save, undo, or put the file back

Press Command-S to save. Press Command-Z to undo your typing and Shift-Command-Z to redo it. Revert discards the unsaved text and reads the file from disk again.

03

Unsaved work stops live reload

Imark normally follows every save made by another app. As soon as you type, it stops following the file so an external save cannot erase your unsaved work. The close button shows the edited dot, and closing the window, quitting Imark, or opening another document asks what to do first.

04

If the file changes somewhere else

Imark checks the file on disk before every save. If another app or person changed it after Imark read it, Imark refuses the save instead of writing over that work.

05

Open a larger change in a full editor

Open in stays in the toolbar while you edit. Use it to send the file to Cursor, VS Code, Zed, Sublime, Claude, or ChatGPT when the change grows beyond a quick correction. Imark runs nothing on your machine and asks nothing of your accounts.

Questions

What people want to know.

Does Imark open in editing mode?

No. Every document opens in reading mode. Click the pencil or press Command-E when you want the Markdown text.

How do I save an edit?

Press Command-S. Imark checks that the file has not changed on disk before it writes your changes.

What happens if another app saves while I am typing?

Imark stops live reload while you have unsaved changes. When you try to save, it refuses if the file on disk changed after Imark read it, so your save cannot overwrite that work.

Can I undo and redo typing?

Yes. Press Command-Z to undo and Shift-Command-Z to redo.

Is Imark a replacement for a full Markdown editor?

No. Editing is for fixing the document you are reading. Open in sends a larger change to Cursor, VS Code, Zed, Sublime, Claude, or ChatGPT.
